About us

The events of November 1989 initiated large changes in society that allowed intense preparations of the establishment of a new faculty that would deal with economics. The Faculty of Economics and Administration was established in 1990 as the first post-November faculty of Masaryk University to commence instructions in September 1991. Since then, it has developed into a stabilised institution offering today economic education to almost four thousands of students in bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree studies. Faculty’s of Economics and Administration primary mission is developing courses and research in economic sciences.

The faculty research issues from the structure and profiles of its fields of study affecting the departments’ issues of long-term research plans. Today, the faculty orients its research effort to exploring the competition abilities of Czech economy (Research Centres Project), public sector efficiency assessment, organisation’s structure development trends for business management, company human resources utilisation, regional development and its economic aspects.

The faculty contributes to the scientific research projects run together with the National Educational Fund, Economic and Management University Grant Fund, with the National Economic Institute or the Czech Academy’s of Sciences Theory of Information and Automation Institute. On a long-term basis, it collaborates with research institutes and other government or local administration institutions, particularly with the Institute for Spatial Development, Brno Chamber of Commerce and Regional Development Agency South Moravia.

In terms of instructions, the faculty offers bachelor’s and master’s programmes fields of study in both on-site and combined modes focused on economics, economic information systems, financial management, economic policy and management, national economics and business management, regional development and management through public finance. The faculty also opens the field named l´Administration publique – public administration taught in French the syllabus of which has been formed together with the University of Rennes, France, being oriented to public administration well-qualified officers training. The students pass through internships and special courses in Czech and French public institutions. The FEA cooperates with the Faculties of Arts and Law to open bachelor’s studies in the field of European Economic, Administrative and Cultural Studies. With a view to opening the studies at the faculty for more applicants with practical experience background it has included lifelong learning events in its offer of studies. The lifelong learning instructions cover the accredited fields and programmes and other activities based on continuous addition of new knowledge, skills and qualification.

Since 2004/2005 academic year, the faculty has opened parallel fields of study in bachelor’s combined-mode studies in Telč University Centre focused on economics, public administration, regional development, tourist industry, banking and management. Along with those fields of study the Telč Centre runs also lifelong learning programmes. The graduates of the faculty receive all possible support to become wanted experts. They realize their potential in a number of professions from bank management through experts in contemporary theoretical economics or managing executives of non-profit government and non-government organisations, or they may find jobs as economic processes counsellors for information technology development and operation or in banking or insurance industry. Other options for them include positions in national economics concept or analysis-oriented positions in financial or banking houses, government administration bodies, economic journalism or counselling. Many of them involve in corporate management, in running business of particularly tourist industry, in regional development or administration institutions, in economic positions within public and non-government non-profit sector.

Faculty of Economics and Administration in numbers

  • As of 31 October 2008, there were 4468 students of regular diploma studies at this faculty altogether, out of which 2760 in bachelor’s degree programmes, 1532 in master’s degree programmes.
  • As of 31 October 2008 another 176 students were in the doctoral degree programmes.
  • We have 7 departments, employing 197 personnel, out of which 12 are professors and 18 associate professors.
  • The students are taught by 167 instructors altogether, out of which 126 are MU staff, 14 students and 27 externs outside MU.
  • In 2008 we registered 8896 applicants for studies in all open admission procedures, out of which 3104 were accepted.
  • We educate 9 seriously handicapped students.
  • The number of students going abroad in the academic year of 2008/2009 was 101, the number of students coming from abroad in the same academic year was 2.
  • The graduates from regular studies in 2008 reached the number of 547, out of which 249 from bachelor’s, 286 from master’s and 12 from PhD studies.

  • Since 1994, there have been 6119 graduates from the studies at our faculty.
