| Description | The article examines the argumentation presented by the Russian President Putin in the so-called Crimean speech (18 March 2014). It uses a model of critical discourse analysis for research of argumentative structures presented by Teun A. van Dijk (1992). This model is applied to Putin's argumentative strategy of using figure prolepsis: mentioning and then refuting an anticipated counterargument. The paper focuses on how Putin uses prolepsis to construct his opponents designated as "Western colleagues". The analysis is based on a combination of identification of argumentative structures of three cases of prolepsis and analysis of cognitive and social representations of "Western colleagues" in them. |
