Two introductory chapters deal with subject field of “environmental history” and its development, methodology and data sources. The following text is divided into two main parts. In the first part, the development of the Czech landscape from the Neogene till present is described concisely and systematically. It is followed by a collection of case studies in the second part of the book. They deal with history of forests and forestry, mining and its influence on landscape, environmental consequences of the plague pandemics, historical floods, landscape changes caused by post-war resettlement of borderland, and development of the urban landscape. Three chapters deal with environmental history on a local scale: bastion fortress of Olomouc, town of Nový Jičín, and Trutnov region.
