Description The foundation of the modern circular geometry is widely connected with the famous Swiss geometer Jakob Steiner, who allegedly discovered the circle inversion around 1824, although it has not been mentioned in his published works. In the paper we show that practically the same planar mapping has been used more than hundred years before Steiner as seen in the Opticks by Isaac Newton.
