Citation
Description At several places of his main works David Hume discusses the relationship between conceivability and possibility; the well known formulation of 'established metaphysical maxim' states that anything that the mind clearly conceives, involves the idea of the possible existence (Treatise, p. 32). The paper considers the components of the maxim, namely the concepts of conceivability and possibility. I also mention the alternative formulations or variants of Hume's maxim, especially the thesis of inconceivability. I pay attention also to the critical response by Thomas Reid; I consider which variant of the conceivability principle is actually affected by them.
