Description The paper demonstrates applicatibilty and usefullness of colorimetry as a fast and facile tool for assessment of limestones as cement and lime industry raw material quality. Colorimetric measurements have not been applied in this field yet. The results of colorimetric analyses of a large set of samples from the Mokrá Quarry in the Moravian Karst (NE from Brno, Czech Republic) and comparison to the results obtained by other methods are presented. The examined samples belong to two lithologically different series of strata: the Macocha Formation and the Líšeň Formation. Limestones of these formations differ in structure, contents of non-carbonate component and, hence, in colour. The samples were prepared in four ways for colorimetric measurements: i/ unpolished bulk samples (fracture planes were measured), ii/ polished sections, iii/ powder in a plastic bag, iv/ simple bare powder. All of the four ways of sample preparation led to different results. The results were expressed using a CIE L*a*b* colour space. Based on the L* (specific lightness) value, the amounts of a non-carbonate component can be roughly judged. The specific lightness can be used for assigning a sample to a lithostratigraphic member and possibly also to correlation reasons in many cases.
