Description The chapter is aimed at plasma treatment system that permits permanent hydrophilization of light-weight polypropylene nonwovens (PPNW) in ambient air at the plasma exposure time less than 1 second with very low power consumption of approximately 1 kWh/kg on a continuous web handling system similar to a corona treating system. The heart of the equipment is a novel plasma generating device designed to generate a thin diffuse layer of "cold" plasma in any working gas at a high power density of ~ 100 W/cm3. The hydrophization of 18 gsm basisweight spunbonded PPNW is permanent and is completely washresistant. The plasma technique was tested also for in-line activation of PPNW (10 gsm) on manufacturing line running at speed 450 m/min following by water soluble surfactant post-treatment.
