Description Spring fens are groundwater fed wetlands which vary in water chemistry, ranging in groundwater mineral richness from calcium-poor acidic to calcium-rich tufa-forming types. We explored 41 isolated spring fens, where we quantitatively sampled clitellate assemblages and obtained continuously measured water temperature along with other environmental and climatic conditions. Variance partitioning revealed pure significant effects of mineral richness 12% and group of temperature variables 4%; organic matter only 1%. Total diversity, diversity of asexually reproducing species, diversity of surface active species, and total abundance were linearly related to environmental variables by GLM modelling. Positive answer to TOC in substrate, amount of organic matter and negative for inorganic matter were found for total diversity in most parsimonious model (32% of variance). Water temperature variability was important for abundance of terrestrial species only.
