Description The article deals with several types of documentary evidence which contains information about floods before the beginning of systematic instrumental measurements in the Czech Republic. The chronology of the historical floods for four main rivers (the Vltava, the Elbe, the Ohře, the Morava) was compiled on the basis of the database of historical-climatological records. A synthesis of the frequency of floods during the period 1351-2000 was compiled based on the floods exceeding two-year discharge in the instrumental period and existing documentary evidence in the previous time.
