| Description | The chapter presents an overview of the invertebrate and vertebrate fauna of the major types of floodplain forests in the temperate zone of Europe, based on an extensive literature search and information obtained directly from specialists on the individual animal groups. Key ecological factors that characterize the given environment are described and the current level of our knowledge on animal communities in the individual forest strata or in important types of microhabitat are presented. The text is accompanied by colour images of animals living in floodplain forests. |
