Inequality, Uncertainty, and Entry into Marriage

| Popis | Growing socioeconomic inequality and uncertainty are supposed to lead to profound changes in the patterning of the life course in modern societies. While this general thesis has been tested repeatedly using a variety of data from West European as well as North American societies, sociology has been rather slow to look into life course transformations in other societal contexts including Central European countries. In the proposed paper I plan to fill in this gap. I plant to study entry into marriage using discrete-time event history models. I will show how marriage entry is determined by current and anticipated socioeconomic status of potential partners and how has this stratification changed over historical periods. Using data from the Czech Republic and possibly other Central European countries (Slovakia, Hungary, Poland) I will be comparing the communist and post-communist periods. Moreover, I will distinguish distinct stages within post-communism that are marked by different levels of inequality and uncertainty. Then I will include interaction terms between status measures (current and anticipated) and period identifiers to see if (and to what extent) the socioeconomic stratification of marriage entry has changed. I will be utilizing data from several surveys. Treiman and Szelenyis Social stratification in Eastern Europe after 1989 is the primary source of data. I will complement it with some more recent surveys including the Czech life course supplement to the 2002 ISSP and possibly other sources. |
