The submitted contribution is a reflection of the strategic management, which has assumed importance not only in the area of higher education. The introductory part of the contribution deals with strategic analysis as a basis for strategic management. Within the framework of the analysis, basic factors affecting the present situation of higher education institutions are defined. The exposition of strategic management and its respective phases follows, i.e. formulation, implementation and evaluation of the strategy. The conclusion is markedly inspired by the contemplated amendment to related legal regulations.
