About us

University education for teachers of all levels and types of school was made a legal requirement by a presidential decree in 1945 and this was followed by a related law in 1946 which allowed for the creation of Faculties of Education. The Faculty of Education of Masaryk University began to operate in Autumn 1946 as the fifth faculty of this university.

The main aim of the faculty is the same today as in the past: the education of teachers for nursery schools, primary and lower secondary schools and in some subjects for upper secondary schools. The faculty also offers study programmes in the fields of special and social education. The structure of the study programmes is further enhanced by life-long education, whose conversion and short-term programmes are offered in response to the needs of the teaching profession. Over 6000 students study at the faculty, as well as 1000 participants of the life-long programmes.

Graduates of the Faculty of Education mostly continue their careers in the area of education, but also in social services and in the health profession. Students with Bachelor degrees are qualified to work as a lower secondary school teaching assistant, a nursery school teacher, an instructor in a leisure centre, in social education work with people of all ages and social backgrounds or in special education in special nursery schools and other school establishments. Students with Masters degrees are fully qualified as teachers at primary and secondary schools and at schools for pupils with additional educational needs depending on their area of study. Doctoral students, who are experts in the area of education with various specialisations (including music and arts), or in the area of special education, find work mostly as academic staff at universities or in research and science institutions, but also in governmental and managerial positions.

Research and development at the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University is mainly focussed on the area of school education and research in subject-specific methodology, but also on the area of special and social education, education aimed at health and a healthy life-style and multicultural education.

The Faculty of Education is currently involved in two research programmes. The aim of the first, School and Health for the 21st Century (2005 - 2011), is an overview of the issue of health with regard to its physical, psychological and social components in the context of basic school education. This programme allows specialists from the fields of educational psychology, health psychology, social medicine and education to work together on the issue of health. The second programme which has been undertaken for the years 2007-2013 is the research project named Pupils with Additional Needs in the Context of the Educational Framework for Basic Education, which is intended to be an applied, long-term, intensive piece of research aimed at inclusive education of pupils with special educational needs with a view to gradually introducing the Educational Framework for Basic Education into schools. The knowledge gained will be used for adjusting the curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate teacher trainers for primary and lower secondary schools.

The aim of the Research Institute for School Education (called the Centre for Educational Research until 2003) is to research curricula and teaching in the whole range of school educational fields. Research activities are aimed at supporting the professionalisation of teaching and contributing to the increasing orientation of the Faculty of Education towards scientific research, especially in the areas of general and subject-specific methodology. The Research Institute looks at the general issue of educational methodology, takes part in research projects, undertakes its own research and is involved in teaching educational methodology for the Masters and Doctoral study programmes. The most important current project of this new institution is the research centre called The Centre for Basic Research of School Education, which is being worked on in cooperation with the Faculty of Education of Charles University in Prague (2006-2010).

Experts from the individual departments concentrate on research in the scientific fields which are particular to the faculty, either in a team of researchers from the faculty, or in cooperation with other institutes of higher education or research. A unique event among universities is the annual summer archaeological research which takes place at the Great Moravian settlement of St. Hypolit in Znojmo. The Department of Geography organises regular expeditions for students to Latin America (Peru, Cuba, Guatemala).

The Department of Social Education cooperates with colleagues from other faculties and universities to organise a variety of educational programmes for people from ethnic minorities and students from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. Educationalists and students created a programme for free-time activities within the framework of a project for a social educational centre in Angola; in partnership with the charity People in Need they built a centre for free –time activities here in the Czech Republic.

The Department of Music Education runs the Masaryk University Choir, which has received a number of international awards and is one of the top choirs in Europe. The Department of Art Education is also involved in many activities, including some significant exhibitions and the organisation of an annual international competition for the student population at large called the Phenomenon of the Book.

The Faculty works closely with institutions such as the Office for Refugee Facilities of the Ministry of Interior Affairs, the Museum of Romany Culture in Brno, the Lužánky Centre for Free-Time Activities, Lipka – which is a centre for environmental education, the Veronica Ecological Institute and the Municipal Arts Centre in Brno.

In a wide range of scientific subjects, the faculty cooperates with institutions abroad.Among the most important international projects is the EQUAL project - an initiative of the European Union aimed at preventing discrimination and inequality in the workplace (2002-2005). The project named Integrated Guidance for Disadvantaged Persons in the Job Market in the Context of National and European Cooperation in cooperation with Austrian, German and Dutch partners has markedly improved the integration of handicapped persons into the job market, increased the opportunities for graduates of special schools to be able to realise themselves professionally and encouraged people to search for ways in which to offer young people with special needs the chance to develop both personally and socially. In the years 2005-2007, 2 projects from the European Commission for the Development of Human Resources Operational Programme were undertaken, namely Lifelong Learning in the area of Special Education (implementation of Act 563/2004 about teaching staff) and An Activizational and Learning Centre (as a follow-up to the EQUAL project results). At the current time there are 5 projects in process at the faculty within the Education for Competitiveness Operational Programme (Support for teaching practice of special education students, Increased competence of scientific-research staff especially in the area of methodology, Competence in Language Education at Masaryk University – COMPACT, Increasing the study and professional outlooks of children and young people from socially disadvantaged backgrounds and the Creation of methodological materials and methods for introducing English teaching in the form of CLIL into other taught subjects at the second stage of primary school and the lower stage of Grammar schools).
