In United Europe tertiary vocational learners need foreign language skills for their future profession. Their usage of foreign language is supposed to be highly practical with specialised vocabulary and genuinly realistic which encompasses a lot of social skills. Class techniques and strategies generally used with tertiary learners don’t support learners autonomy enough and are not able to ensure learners being active for most of the learning time. Still there is a demand and tendencies to research and practice various activizing strategies in order to enhance active learners participation in their own learning process. Our research looks at learning by doing which positively affects learners cognitive skills and gives them good experience in development of both communicative and social skills. The researched technique which seems to fulfill all stated requirements is simulation. Simulation used in language learning process has high potencial both in enhancing learners autonomy in learning process and effective development of communicative and social skills. It fits in well in communicative language teaching approach and works well if it becomes a regular part of language learning process. What is more it increases learners motivation because they feel in control of their learning and they can directly see future practical use of all they learn. The paper looks at types of simulation used but also at suggestions how to test and evaluate learners performance in simulated event and gives practical examples of simulations suitable for lessons of tertiary nursing students.
