Masaryk University Press and Faculty of Education publish extensive monograph presenting forms and changes of fairy tales in contemporary Czech literature for children and youth. The authors are experts of literature for children and youth from Department of Czech literature of Faculty of Pedagogy, Masaryk University.
The monograph deals with fairy tales in the Czech literature for children and youth between 1990 and 2010. It describes general development of the genre and of the authors. The original fairy tale is a quantitatively rich and dynamically developing genre which defies simple typological labelling and categorizing.
The introduction provides a contextual frame for following chapters. The book is divided into six parts according to different interpretative frames: “Between folklore and original works” deal with adaptations of folklore fairy tales; “Continuing Václav Čtvrtek’s tradition in the Czech fairy tale” refer to the reverberations of Václav Čtvrtek’s poetics; “The fairy tale in the picture book” analyze new phenomenon of picture books of fairy tales; “Nonsense, parody, travesty and humorous shifts” describes authors as Arnošt Goldflam or Alois Mikulka; “Imaginative fairy tale” present fairy tales for children and their parents; and “Fairy tales in instructive literature” deal with utilitarian fairy tales.
The monograph proves that fairy tales are constant part of Czech literature for children and youth. Their communicational, functional and structural shifts are varying and fairy tales come into contact or contamination with other genres.
