hygiene problems for
modern cities when the waste is not collected regularly. When sanitation workers
go on strike, or
garbage collection is otherwise interrupted, life in cities becomes unbearable.

This book is a sociological analysis of the contemporary problem of illegal waste shipment from Germany to the Czech Republic. Since 2005, at least 30,000 tons of municipal solid waste has been transported improperly from Germany to Bohemia, where it has been deposited on farms, in warehouses, an old military base, and other inappropriate locations. This has caused social conflict and risks to public health and the environment. The main question guiding this research is: What is the cause of the problem with illegal waste shipments into Bohemia?
