Popis The development of Czech media during the last 25 years has been influenced by commercialization, which characterized the transformation from a communist regime on the one hand and globalization on the other. The commercialization of local media manifests itself in the erosion of their local characteristics (delocalization). This text uses a case study approach (content analysis and in-depth interviews) for an analysis of the case of the Vltava-Labe-Press (VLP) publishing house that dominates the Czech local press market. The analysis focuses on changes in media content as a consequence of the rationalization and centralization of the publishing house’s production processes. The analysis shows that the more the management talked about content localization and the more the formal features appeared localized, the less local the content actually was. The delocalized character of the Czech local press is likely to have an adverse effect on the democratic and political empowerment of local communities.
