Popis Plasmachemical effects of electrical discharges generated at atmospheric pressure in the gas and vapour phase in and around liquids have attracted wide attention in the literature [1-3]. The water plasmas generated by discharges which use water based electrolytes have already demonstrated their potential for surface modification of polymer materials and are emerging as a very flexible concept to generate selective functionalized polymer surfaces [4]. We have developed a novel type of surface dielectric barrier discharge generating thin layers of visually diffuse plasmas along the treated polymer surfaces using water-solution electrodes. The technique has been designed particularly to achieve uniform low-cost treatment of surfaces of polymeric tubes and other hollow bodies that is a serious challenge for atmospheric pressure plasma processing. This type of the discharge could be used for activation of surface of plastic or ceramic materials, which can lead to the chemical changes of the surface, etc. oxidation, chemical functionalization, attachment of new materials for better surface hydrophilization and compatibilities with other materials. The discharge was studied using high-speed camera and optical emission spectrometry in order to asses the rotational and vibrational temperatures. Discharge voltage and current waveforms were measured with a high time resolution.
