Popis Uric acid (UA) is generated from hypoxanthine and xanthine with xanthine oxidase as a rate-limiting enzyme. Recent evidence shows that UA is an important risk factor of several diseases including T1DM, T2DM and those related to lifestyle. Hypouricaemia is mostly related to glycosuria and decreased metabolic control meanwhile hyperuricaemia is a feature of hyperinsulinaemia and insulin resistance. Therefore UA can play a pathogenic role not only in T2DM but also in gestational diabetes (GDM). UA levels can be influenced by SNPs in genes encoding its transporters (ABCG2 rs2231142, SLC2A9 rs12498742 etc.). GDM is a disturbance in glucose homeostasis with the first onset during pregnancy and can be considered as a predictor of woman’s predisposition of developing a permanent diabetes postpartum.
