Popis A new method has been applied to fabricate bimodal grain structure in ultrafine-grained low carbon steels. This method is based on the plane strain compression of a martensitic starting structure and subsequent annealing at elevated temperature for short time. The annealing process was carried out at the temperature of 500 and 600 degrees C for 1.5 ks and 120 s, respectively. The final microstructure after recrystallization is composed of ultrafine and coarse grains along with the precipitation of carbide particles (cementite) within the coarse grains. This has been considered to be the reason for the observed superior balance of ductility and strength. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
