Popis | In the talk, I show why the Superset Principle is needed for phrasal spell-out, while the Subset Principle fails. I build on this theoretical result by showing that the Superset Principle is to be preferred on empirical grounds as well, as it allows us to capture certain restrictions on syncretism that the Subset Principle fails to derive. Specifically, I show that a linear contiguity constraint on the syncretism of datives--allatives--locatives allows us to see how the empirical predictions of the two principles differ, and presents a case in favor of the Superset Principle. |
