Popis We suggest to use the term "synchondrosis" only for junctures mediated by hyaline cartilage, even if the boundary between bone and rib does not represent a growth plate. The term "symphysis" should indicate only fibrocartilaginous junctions. The junction between rib bone and rib cartilage could not be definitively characterised as a synchondrosis or a symphysis. In juvenile animals it was a growth plate. In adult animals, a smooth, wavy contact line between bone and hyaline cartilage without any transition zone could be detected. Neither in young nor in adult animals fibrocartilaginous elements were found between rib bone and rib cartilage. Periost and perichondrium of the rib, which probably guarantee the mechanical connection of bone and cartilage, however contained fibrocartilage. In contrast to the pelvic symphysis of the pig, a disc of hyaline cartilage with growth plates on both sides, the inter-vertebral disc represented a true symphysis facilitated by fibrocartilage. Thus, the pelvic symphysis of the juvenile pig could not be used as a positive control for fibrocartilaginous junctions.
