Popis The presentation will introduce the project CPV Video Study of English, the aim of which is to document and analyse the processes of teaching and learning as they take place in every-day English classrooms in the Czech Republic. A randomised sample of English lessons taught at Czech lower-secondary schools was collected in 2007. Analyses carried out within the project focus on various aspects of teaching, such as modes of classroom interaction, phases of instruction, using didactic tools and media, opportunities to talk, the use of mother tongue, opportunities for developing language skills, and the role of gender stereotypes. To understand the structure of the lessons analysed, these lesson features are observed in their coincidences. The concepts of opportunities to learn, lesson structure, and opportunities to talk were used to analyse the lessons. Lesson signatures were developed through overlaying the individual lessons analysed in order to discover regularities in the teaching patterns of the participating English teachers. Video recordings of lessons were coded using system of categories developed by the IPN Video Study team (Seidel, Prenzel 2007) and the CPV Video Study team (Najvar et al. 2009); quantitative analyses of lesson transcripts were also carried out. Towards the end of the presentation, possibilities of using the acquired video recordings in pre-service and in-service teacher education will also be discussed.
