Popis The close relationship between soil organic matter and bioavailability of POPs in soils suggests a possibility to use it for bioavailability extrapolation (and consequently toxicity or bioaccumulation) between different soils. However, TOC content is not a single factor affecting the bioavailability, which was verified in your and several other studies (Amorim et al., 2002; Hofman et al., 2008). Characteristics of compounds, organisms, and soils influence bioavailability and wide variability of these properties increases uncertainties for making general conclusions from individual studies. Moreover, bioavailability is affected also by time of soil-contaminant contact, so-called aging (Alexander, 2000). To study soil properties which influence availability to earthworms (Eisenia fetida), three natural soil representing the Czech Republic land resources were tested (TOC content 1.8%, 5.6%, and 12.6%). Moreover, artificial soils with the same TOC content were prepared. Soils were spiked with five model POPs (phenanthrene, pyrene, lindane, DDT, and PCB 153) and bioaccumulation and total concentration were measured during two months. Other modification of the experiment was sterilization. Extractions in DCM and HPCD were measured in some soils too.
