Popis elomerase is precisely regulated during development and in animals, involvement of the epigenetic mechanisms to the regulation of the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) gene transcription was reported. In Arabidopsis thaliana model plant, low level of methylated cytosines in the TERT upstream region was detected in both telomerase-positive and telomerase-negative tissues and AtTERT chromatin maintained the euchromatic nature despite the increased H3K27me3 loading in telomerase-negative tissue. These results may reflect a unique attribute of plants – their totipotency - which accords with a reversible and dynamic character of telomerase silencing.
