If you are coming to work as a researcher in the Czech Republic and your family members wish to join you, rules for the residency permit may differ depending on nationality.

Citizens of EU member states, as well as those from Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Switzerland, may stay in the territory of the Czech Republic without a visa or another permit.

Your family member will need to apply for a long-term residence permit. For family members accompanying researchers we recommend a Long-term residence permit for the purpose of "family reunification". The application must be submitted at a Czech embassy and is usually being processed within 60 days.

Applicants should submit the following documents (in Czech, with an official translation if the original was not in Czech):

  1. Travel document
  2. Proof of accommodation
  3. 2 photographs
  4. Documentary evidence of the family relationship (e.g. a birth or marriage certificate)
  5. Proof of finance - a document showing you can afford to stay in the Czech Republic
  6. Green application form - check your country code here
  7. Travel health insurance - insurance must cover the entire stay in the Czech Republic
  8. Parental consent
  9. upon request - criminal history to assess one´s criminal record.

The documents shall not be older than 180 days except for the travel document, birth certificate, marriage certificate and the photograph of the foreign national if it corresponds to his/her actual appearance.

Third country nationals accompanying nationals of EU/EEA member states must usually have a visa to enter the Czech Republic (a short-term Schengen visa), unless they are citizens of the countries exempt from the visa requirement.

No visa is required for a stay of up to 3 months if your family member (regardless of their citizenship) possesses a certificate of temporary residence or a permanent residence permit issued by another EU state, or Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway or Switzerland.
