The UI GreenMetric rankings are meant to evaluate to which extent universities develop their infrastructure and education in accordance with the environment and sustainability principles. The rankings’ aim is to contribute to the academic debate about sustainability in education and to support the social change lead by universities with respect to the sustainability goals.

The evaluation is based on 6 main criteria: infrastructure, energy & climate change, waste management, water usage, transportation, and education & research.

Masaryk University joined the UI GreenMetric ranking for the first time in 2020, when it was ranked 229th out of 912 universities assessed. In the following two years, it continued to improve its ranking even as competition in the rankings increased. In 2023, MU ranks 119th out of 1 183 participating universities. MU's best ranking was in the Transportation category (62nd). Within the Czech Republic, it is ranked 2nd behind the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (ranked 36th worldwide).
