MUNI ranked 161st in QS Sustainability ranking and the best in Czech Republic
In the second edition of the QS Sustainability Rankings, which assesses the contribution of universities to addressing the challenges of sustainable development, 1,403 higher education institutions from 95 countries were ranked this year. Masaryk University ranked the best in the Czech Republic and improved its world position from last year's 281st-300th to this year's 161st.
According to the current methodology, the ranking is based on 53 parameters, which it groups into three pillars of Social Impact, Environmental Impact and Governance. Twenty-four percent of the ranking is based on inputs sent to QS and evidenced by the universities themselves. For the major bulk of the assessment, QS then draws information from other sources (Elsevier, reputation surveys, publicly available national statistics, independent third-party assessments).
Masaryk University has improved its scores in all indicators this year. The highest year-on-year improvement was achieved in the Knowledge Exchange indicator, from score 57 last year to 91.3 this year. It values cooperation with institutions from developing countries, the offer of outreach activities to the public, and the impact of our institution's scientific outputs in the development of policy documents. MUNI scored highly also in the new Governance pillar, which tracks the institution's ethical, environmental, transparent and democratic behaviour. MUNI scored 89.6 out of a possible 100.
There are other strong indicators with placements in the top 200. In Equality, MUNI received a score of 85.8. This indicator monitors the institution's scientific performance related to equality issues, the gender balance of the institution, the level of support provided on campus to disadvantaged groups, the embedding of inclusion in binding documents, and also includes the results of a reputation survey among academics and national statistics on the topic of equality. In the Environmental Research indicator, MUNI received a score of 87.4. Having a research centre in the field of environmental research, strong scientific performance in the environmental field and impact on policy binding documents related to the same field have all helped.
