Great outcomes for MUNI in Shanghai Ranking by subjects

Masaryk University has been successfully ranked in thirteen out of 55 subjects by Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranging of Akacemic Subjects. In the subjects of Environmental Science & Engineering and Geography it holds a position within the TOP 200. In these fields and the subject of Biotechnology, MUNI is also the first best in the Czech Republic, while for Biotechnology subject MUNI is actually the only Czech institution ranked (global position 401st-500th). Further positions on the first place among Czech institutions is shared by Masaryk University with Charles University - these are the subjects of Law (201st-300th), Political Sciences (301st-400th) and Psychology (401st-500th).

High scores in these categories were earned by Masaryk University mainly due to well set international cooperation (indicator of the number of publications published with a foreign co-author), as well as publishing in prestigious journals and above-average citation rate of publications according to the InCites database.

A total of 11 institutions from Czech Republic were ranked in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, including Charles University (ranked in 20 subjects), Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (7 subjects), Palacký University Olomouc and University of South Bohemia (5 subjects both) and others.

Improvement of MUNI's position in THE World University Rankings

This year's edition of the international university rankings THE WUR represents almost two thousand education institutions around the world. The University of Oxford has defended its 1st position for the eighth time in a row, with Stanford University and MIT coming in second and third. Masaryk University is ranked 601st-800th, improving it's position since the last year's rank of 801-1000.

For this year's ranking, Times Higher Education has expanded the range of indicators it tracks. It's been added an assessment of students' international mobility, in the area of cooperation with industry a new indicator tracks total number of publications that are cited by patents, and several new bibliometric indicators have been added as well. In total, the ranking now tracks 18 indicators grouped into five thematic pillars. Masaryk University fares best in the evaluation of the Research Environment (442nd position) and International Outlook (459th position). Year-on-year, it has improved the most in the area of Industry (moving 323 places, 943rd position), and slightly in the evaluation of Research Quality (moving 112 places, 1018th position). In the pillar assessing Teaching, we ranked 942nd.

Out of Czech Republic, 18 universities got ranked, with Charles University in the first place (401st-500th overall), Masaryk University the second, followed by Palacký University Olomouc and the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, both at the overall rank 801-1000.

MUNI among the TOP 200 universities in Europe according to the new QS rankings

Masaryk University has been ranked 161st in the very new regional rankings, QS World University Rankings: Europe 2024. This year the ranking includes 688 European higher education institutions from 42 countries of the Council of Europe. The University of Oxford, ETZ Zurich and the University of Cambridge top the list.

In the European comparison of specific indicators of the rankings, Masaryk University stands out in the TOP100 for the indicator International Student Diversity (88th position) with almost 8,000 international students from 112 countries, and for the indicator Sustainability (93rd position), which takes into account not only the sustainable behaviour of the institution in its own governance, but also the social impact and environmental impact of research and education.

Within the Czech Republic, 17 universities managed to rank, with Charles University in the best position, Masaryk University in 2nd place, followed by the Czech Technical University in Prague and Brno University of Technology. In the Eastern Europe sub-region, MU ranked a prestigious 4th place next to Charles University, University of Warsaw and Jagiellonian University.

Masaryk University excels in the QS Europe ranking mainly due to its strong position in the highly rated indicators such as Academic Reputation (30% rating), Employer Reputation (15% rating), International Research Network (10% rating) and Sustainability (5% rating). It is also worth mentioning the first best score among Czech universities in the indicator Papers per Faculty.

MU once again TOP 500 according to the ARWU 2023 ranking

In August 2023, new results of the international Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU or Shanghai Ranking) has been released. Also this year Masaryk University is ranked the Top500 out of the best-ranked institutions in the world. In the Czech Republic we hold the 2nd position behind Charles University. More than 2,500 institutions have been evaluated, and the ranking publishes the top 1,000.

ARWU uses six objective indicators, namely the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal winners among alumni and staff, the number of highly cited researchers, the number of articles published in Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded™ and Social Sciences Citation Index™ on Web of Science™, and the university's performance in the previous indicators per academic staff member.
