Admission procedure guide

Have you decided to enrol in a doctoral degree programme at Masaryk University? Contact your chosen faculty and find out how to proceed. Each faculty has a unique set of admission conditions. However, before you start, do read the following section so you know exactly what's in store.

  • Figure out what you want to focus on.

Not sure yet? Browse the degree programmes on offer.

    Choose a field of study

  • Choose a doctoral thesis topic

Have you made up your mind and identified a research goal? Great! You can suggest a doctoral thesis topic yourself. Alternatively, you can also browse through lists of previously announced topics. Some faculties publish their lists, in some cases you may have to refer to the office for doctoral studies.

  • Contact the office for doctoral studies and find a supervisor

Have you selected a field of study and thesis topic? Find out which supervisors are accepting new students from the department for doctoral studies at your chosen faculty.

Then, contact your future supervisor directly. They will serve as your guide and thesis consultant throughout your studies. They can also help you formulate your thesis topic.

    Contact the office for studies

  • Register for studies

Check the registration deadline. This varies according to your chosen field of study. Submit the electronic application form and pay the 400 CZK fee.

    Submit an entrance application

  • Pass the admission procedure

The procedure is different at each faculty. You must convince the admissions committee that you have a genuine interest in the selected topic. The faculty will inform you of all of the particulars at least a month in advance. However, the general conditions are already available at the faculty website.

  • Once admitted, proceed to enrolment

You will most likely learn whether you have been admitted or not directly from the admissions committee; alternatively, you may be informed by mail or via the e-application. You will also be informed of enrolment dates and conditions, although these are also to be found on the faculty website. Please note that you only become a student following enrolment.

In case you were not admitted, you may file a request for review of the decision.

“I became involved in several projects in my fourth year. I found my research activities more fulfilling than a standard job and realized that I wanted to study while also working at the faculty. I selected my topic of choice – national debt, national efficiency – from among current topics on offer and contacted two or three potential supervisors. The dean contacted me first, saying that he would gladly supervise my thesis. I sent him an essay as part of the entrance examination and we subsequently agreed to further specify my thesis topic.”
