Description: The aim of the course is to introduce participants to the principles of planning, management, and maintenance of green spaces in urban and suburban areas. The course will focus on sustainable practices in vegetation management and on criteria for selecting plant material, with particular emphasis on the use of autochthonous and regionally native species. A significant part of the course will be devoted to lawns.
The summer school will take place over five days during a specified period. Throughout the week, participants will attend expert thematic lectures in the morning sessions, and in the afternoon sessions, they will work on a week-long project to design a solution for a selected green space within a defined area. Summer school will include a field excursion to seek inspiration for the student project.
The student project represents a comprehensive solution (modification or new establishment) for a public green space within the selected area, including a proposal for implementation and management, developed by student groups under professional supervision. Student projects will be presented and discussed at a “mini-conference” on the final day of the course in an open format for the public.
The program will be conducted primarily in English.
The summer school will take place in the municipality of Dolní Dunajovice (CZ - https://mapy.com/s/bufonugema). Accommodation and meals will be provided on-site for all participants throughout the course. Accommodation will be provided free of charge. The course fee will cover meals, social activities, and the excursion costs
The summer school (SS) is primarily intended for students of the following study programs: landscape architecture, nature conservation, landscape protection and planning, spatial/urban planning, implementation and management of green spaces, and other related fields, primarily from the Czech Republic and Austria.

Learning outcomes: The main outcome of the summer school is a student project – a design proposal for the modification or new establishment of a public green space within the selected area.
Through this work, participants will gain experience in:
- collaborative problem-solving within an interdisciplinary team,
- the complete process of public space design (from initial concept to final design),
- defending and presenting their proposal to representatives of the public, municipalities, and experts.
These practical skills will be complemented by expert knowledge on public green spaces from botanical, landscape, architectural, and practical perspectives, gained through lectures and presentations.
Graduates of the summer school will expand their knowledge of modern approaches to the planning, management, and development of public green spaces from both practical and theoretical perspectives. The acquired knowledge, skills, and professional contacts can be applied in landscape and garden architecture practice, in public administration and local government, in nature and landscape conservation, as well as in the preparation and implementation of strategic and design projects.
Course delivery: Education will take place on the first, second, and fourth days of the course in two blocks:
(1) Morning theoretical lectures (presentations, lectures) thematically focused on a wide range of aspects related to public green space planning and management at both urban and landscape scales.
(2) Afternoon practical session – workshop (work on the team project), including guided teamwork, discussions of project teams with experts, lecturers, and green space managers, as well as fieldwork.
The third day of the course is planned as a full-day field excursion under expert guidance, featuring on-site examples of public green space solutions.
The final day of the course is dedicated to presenting student projects and discussing them with the audience in an open, public format
