Dear alumni, dear colleagues,
I hope our newsletter finds you well before the end of this year. 2024 has been filled with events and adventures both here, at the Faculty of Medicine, and globally. We celebrated our 105th anniversary. We have seen many of our students and researchers excel in their fields. We continue to work hard to make our school a friendly and welcoming place which offers top quality education and research. We are developing new state-of-the-art research facilities, such as BioPharma Hub, a unique medical, pharmaceutical and life science research facility that we started building this year. And … we hope that you are keeping nice memories of your time with us and we hope to stay in touch with you. Below, you will find some Faculty highlights in 2024 and more.

We celebrated 105 years since the foundation
|

What was 2024 like for us? At the Faculty of Medicine (and at Masaryk University), it was marked by the 105th anniversary of its foundation. As part of the celebrations, we organized several events that were at least symbolically connected with it. Recall some of them with us...

|
As the year draws to a close and the days grow shorter, a variety of feelings stir within many of us. On the one hand, there is the need to complete and accomplish all that we set out to do, to close open chapters and prepare for the holidays in a peaceful and dignified spirit. On the other hand, we may already be feeling tired, overwhelmed or worried about whether and how we will get it all done. In the midst of all this, however, there is an opportunity to pause for a moment and reflect on what has been achieved throughout the year, what we have succeeded in and what we have achieved, and what we are taking with us into the next year.

Did you know we organized monthly discussion meetings with interesting speakers called Research Breakfasts? They are all held in English and if you cannot attend in person, you can find the full videos on our YouTube channel and audio recordings on podcast apps. Find out about exciting research projects of our scientists, about their career paths, and the latest developments in their fields.

On October 12, our Faculty and His Excellency Martin Pohl, Czech Ambassador to Portugal hosted a networking event for our alumni in Portugal at the Czech Embassy in Lisbon. The preceding day, Vice Dean for Internationalisation, Assoc. prof. Křivan along with the Head of the International Studies Office Helena Melicharová presented our Faculty to representatives of local secondary schools.

At the beginning of November, six graduates of the Faculty of Medicine received the Masaryk University Vice-Rector's Award for Excellence in Doctoral Studies.
|
|
|
|
|
The Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University has two representatives in the newly established Czech Society for Artificial Intelligence and Innovative Digital Technologies in Medicine.
|
|
|
|
|
Evelína Voleská from a Grammar school in Česká Třebová has been researching neuropathic pain caused by chemotherapy in cooperation with the Department of Anatomy of our Faculty of Medicine for months. Earlier this year, her efforts in writing her SPAT on neurosciences brought her a Sanitas Award at the Czech Head Awards ceremony. It is given for scientific works and projects in the field of natural sciences that deal with human health.

This year, the Martina Roesel Memorial Grant, aimed at supporting parent scientists, was also awarded to Monika Kratochvílová. The grant will enable her to provide care for her younger son in the children's group so that she can continue her beneficial research on cancer cells. As she says, the award is a great relief and a commitment for her.

Students, lecturers, faculty management and members of the public once again gathered in the ceremonial hall of Brno's central cemetery to pay tribute to the body donors.
|
|
|
|
|
Jan Křivánek and his research group have long been collaborating with Associate Professor Anamaria Balic from the University of Zurich on uncovering the natural behaviour of stem cells. Balic visited the Faculty of Medicine in May so that these research teams could discuss their joint scientific projects.
