Languages at the Court of Justice of the European Union

What language should I use with the Court of Justice of the European Union when I need it? How is the Czech version of European case law produced? Can I always find all the information in Czech? And what role does artificial intelligence play in court proceedings today?

On Monday, 17 February 2025 at 3 pm (venue to be announced), JUDr. Michal Lovritš, a graduate of the Faculty of Law of the European University of Technology, a lawyer-linguist from the Czech language translation department of the CJEU and a member of SAPMU, will talk about the behind-the-scenes use of languages at the highest judicial institution of the European Union.

He will introduce the language regime of the Court of Justice, i.e. which of the official EU languages is used at which stage of the proceedings, why all languages are not equal in court proceedings and what this implies for users of European case law. In this context, he will give an overview of the work of a lawyer-linguist at the CJEU and why the Court requires a legal qualification also for translation assistants. Given recent developments in the field of automatic translators, it will no doubt be interesting to discuss the future of the profession - how far is it affected (or perhaps even threatened) by the advent of artificial intelligence?
