Did you know that the Czech Republic has its own scientific programme in Antarctica? It is overseen by Masaryk University, which has been running the J.G. Mendel Czech Science Station on James Ross Island since 2006 and a field tent camp with a field kitchen on Nelson Island in Antarctica since 2018. In that time, more than one hundred and forty researchers from more than fifty scientific disciplines have rotated through the camp.

Originally a landscape ecologist, climatologist, lawyer and New Zealand cowboy, he has been the manager of the Czech Antarctic Research Programme based at Masaryk University since 2010.
He is mainly involved in the technical, logistical and legal support and management of scientific expeditions to the Antarctic bases of J.G. Mendel (James Ross Island) and CZ*ECO Nelson (Nelson Island), which the programme operates. He is a co-author of the trademark project Tested in Antarctica, which opens the way for cooperation between Antarctic scientists and the application sphere and industry.
For the Czech Republic, he is a delegate and currently Vice-Chair on the Committee of Managers of National Antarctic Programmes (COMNAP), where he leads the Expert Group on Technology and Energy. He serves as an advisor to the inter-ministerial Commission for Antarctica at the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic and also for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic at meetings of the Antarctic Treaty Community (ATCM) and its Commission for Environmental Protection (CEP). He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Czech Antarctic Foundation.
