Brno meets Vienna: Student conference on general linguistics

At the conference, undergraduate and graduate students from Brno and Vienna will present their theoretical, descriptive, experimental and typological work within the subfields of morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics.

BMV is a conference for students organized by students. The purpose of this event is to strengthen the ties between the linguistics student communities in Austria and the Czech Republic and to provide a platform for BA, MA and PhD students to present their work in an academic, but friendly and informal atmosphere. We believe that creating a venue where young linguists from neighboring academic centers can get to know each other, present their research and share their ideas can spark inspiration as well as prospects for further collaboration between the linguistic communities in Brno and Vienna.

In addition to the student presentations, BMV will host three short workshops with distinguished invited speakers from Brno and Vienna. The workshops are meant to be advanced introductory classes on a specialized topic in general linguistics, but more interactive than a typical guest lecture.

  • Semantics/information structure: Daniel Büring (University of Vienna)
  • Syntax: Susi Wurmbrand (Harvard University/University of Vienna)
  • Experimental methods in semantics: Mojmír Dočekal (Masaryk University in Brno)
