A Peculiar Undertaking: David Bowie's Pin Ups (public lecture)

You are cordially invited to a public lecture by Dr. Simon Philo, School of Humanities, University of Derby (UK):
“A Peculiar Undertaking”: David Bowie's Pin Ups

When: Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.
Where: Room G32, Building G, Gorkého 7, Brno

Routinely dismissed as a creative false step, Dr. Philo will argue that David Bowie’s 1973 covers’ album Pin Ups is far from the “peculiar undertaking” the critical consensus would have us believe it to be. It is, in fact, as glam as its celebrated predecessors - Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane - in demonstrating what fuelled the genre.

Dr. Philo is Senior Lecturer in American Studies, and Subject Leader for American Studies and Popular Music in Society at the University of Derby. He has published extensively on American popular culture, with particular reference to its transatlantic "flow." His book “British Invasion: The Crosscurrents of Musical Influence” was published in November 2014. His latest book, to be published on October 15, is entitled “Glam Rock. Music in Sound and Vision” and focuses on how glam rock related to the artistic, political, economic, emotional, sexual, and commercial scenes of the late twentieth century.
