Scientific and Research Activities
  • Paid Childcare and Domestic Work in the Czech Republic and Slovakia
  • In years 2013 – 2016 I did ethnographic research on paid housework and paid home-based childcare in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The research has been supported by Czech Science Foundation (GAČR) Postdoctoral Research Project. Since previous literature focused mainly on paid work provided by migrants, I focused specifically on the arrangements, where care providers and their employers belonged to the same ethnic group and had the same citizenship (Sekeráková Búriková 2016b, 2019a, 2019b). Postsocialist countries had been previously examined mainly as the source of migrant domestic labour, therefore I focused on previously under-researched demand: The research resulted in the book Panie k deťom a na upratovanie (published by Masarykova Unvierzita in 2017).
  • Slovak Au Pairs and London Families: Home, Material Culture and Migration
  • In years 2004 – 2005 I did ethnographic research (participant observation + 50 interviews with au pairs) on Slovak au pairs living and working in London. The research has been supported by The Leverhulme Trust Research Project Grant. I focused on au pairs as important group of paid domestic workers (Búriková 2006a; Búriková and Miller 2010; Sekeráková Búriková 2015; 2019a), on au pair migration as youth migration from Central and Eastern European countries (Búriková 2007; Sekeráková Búriková 2016a) as well as on strategy within postsocialist transformation (Sekeráková Búriková 2014). Since I specialise in material culture studies, I analysed also shared intimacy and ways how au pairs and their hosts negotiated it within materiality of the homes – au pairs are supposed to share households of their hosts (Búriková 2006b). The book Au pair I co-authored with Daniel Miller (published by Polity in 2010 and in the Czech translation in 2013 by SLON) is first book written about au pairs.
