The aim of the project is to interpret the personality and work of Gabriel Cornelius Max (1840-1915), an eminent painter of the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, whose importance has not been hithero sufficiently evaluated by art historians. Through his Czech origin, education in Prague, Vienna and Munich and at least trough his permanent stay in Munich, he represented a typical cultural personality of Central Europe; his artistic influence was evident not only in Germany and then Austria, but also in Hungary. Max passed for a respectable authority in Bohemia, he influenced some of leading representatives of the artistic generation of the 1890´s and he was chosen for a professor post at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. For the interpretation of the Max´s œuvre, the orientation in the period imaginative literature, as well as proficiency in the culture-historic context of the Prague and especially Munich milieu, will be important. The output of the project will be the published monograph, which will interpret Gabriel Cornelius Max not only as a representative of the salon painting, but above all as an artist who anticipated the fin-de-siècle trends and played one of instigate roles in the artistic milieu of Central Europe. A special attention will be devoted to Max´s impact on Czech visual culture.
