The project aims to introduce, implement and evaluate the scaffolding method in the context of reader development. This method represents a trend in the Anglo-Saxon methodology but has yet to be explored within the Czech educational system. The method will be tested by student teachers as part of English language lessons.

Results

The main aim of the project was to introduce, implement and assess the method of scaffolding in an ELT context, using authentic and contemporary reading material for children. In terms of extensive reading, we defined thee stages within the scaffolding process: modelled reading (where the text is selected and activities are devised by the teacher for the whole class), shared reading (which is conducted in pairs or groups and in part at home) and independent reading (i.e. sustained reading done mostly in private). As part of the project a collection of books was created, containing a selection of quality but non-canonical contemporary books for children and teenagers, which will remain available to students and teachers at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University. Three student teachers piloted the project in their classes, aged 6-15, with approximately lower intermediate level of English. Their lesson plans, teaching materials, feedback, evaluation and assessment were assembled in an e-portfolio available at http://moodlinka.ped.muni.cz/course/view.php?id=1710. Their findings confirm contemporary theories on and experience with extensive reading as well as draw attention to the specific features of the Czech background.
