| Description | The tension among the Czech, German, and Jewish communities contributed to the variety of the literary life in both Prague and Brno at the end of the 19th century. Whereas in Prague, Germans were a minority of 7 per cent, albeit with well-established institutions, Brno was largely German-speaking in 1900, when Robert Musil emerged as an author. In contrast to Prague, Brno-based clubs, newspapers, and magazines were more expressly anti-Czech, perhaps due to the lack of a bilingual Jewish mediators. The stereotypes employed in both Brno and Prague are similar, though. |
