Field Oncology and hematology
Keywords stereotactic biopsy; brain tumor; histological verification
Description Together with brain tumor biopsy for histological verification stereotactic technique can be used for tumor cyst evacuation, intracystic drainage implantation for local chemotherapy, implantation of catheters into solid tumors for brachytherapy using radioisotopes and targeting of craniotomy for brain tumor resection. However only the development of modern imaging techniques , such as CT and MRI , able to depict precisely cerebral lesions became decisive for the use of stereotaxy in neurooncology. However some lesions are risky for stereotactic biopsy – vascular lesions, lesions located in the vicinity of blood vessels and cystic or intraventricular lesions , all because of the risk of haemorrhagic complications. Intraventricular lesions and cystic lesions represent the indication for the use of neuroendoscopy in neurooncology.
