| Description | The museology department in Brno is one of the oldest education centers of its kind in the world. Last year marked the ninetieth anniversary of museum studies in Brno. Long efforts to establish such a programme of of higher education culminated when the Masaryk University created its Department of Museology. In 1921 Jaroslav Helfert, the director of the Moravian Museum, was appointed lecturer in museology. His teaching emphasized practical aspects of museums and museology. His lectures focussed on the making of collections, on documentation, on conservation, on the preparation of exhibitions, on museum direction, and on the history of museums. His lectures took place in the Moravian Museum. Since the start of his lectures in 1922, with the exception of the years during the Second World War, the Department of Museum Studies remained in existence in this form until 1951. The Department provided the impulse and inspiration for the university training of museum professionals in the following periods. |
