Description The paper deals with the relationship between a large company and a small town, specifically, the influence an important economic subject imposes on the social climate of a municipality. The study responds to excessive economic orientation of hitherto regional development research within which social and cultural issues are addressed only marginally or not addressed at all. We examine the case of EDP Ltd. (European Data Project), who has localized its manufacturing facilities in Rousínov and Komořany near Vyškov, and attempt at answering the question of what sorts of meanings this company obtained for local residents. After having analyzed the local press and relevant websites, non-participating observation and semi-structured interviews with local residents and employees of the company became the main research methods. From the very beginning a didactic goal accompanied the research as the research was implemented in a university course which focuses on the use of qualitative methods in geography.
