| Description | Study of Religions is a discipline which deals with scientific study of religions. In its research it seeks to maintain a neutral attitude, which means for example that it refuses to promote or deny a particular religion. The field of study – Study of Religions - is accredited (outside the Faculty of Theology) at several academic departments at public universities. Motivation of the students themselves to study this discipline at universities may be various. According to data obtained during my own internal research in the environment of the Department for the Study of Religions, Faculty of Arts in Brno, some students directly link this field of study with their own spiritual seeking. It can be supposed that for a part of the students, secular (non-religious) academic study of religion becomes a means of personal spiritual development. The contribution focuses on the specific aspects of the Study of Religions which allow the development of personal spirituality, even though it is not its declared intention. The contribution tries to answer the question why the study of religion in secular system of education may be the item of interest of the students ‘spiritual seekers’. |
