Description We all know what it feels like to squeeze everything we want to cover into a 90-minute slot. Can you imagine students taking the responsibility? Can you imagine that they could actually fulfill their needs themselves? Can you imagine that their learning would take place outside the classroom and without a teacher? I could not. And then I went to University of Helsinki for an exchange programme and I changed my mind. It is possible. I do believe now that the students can do it. Not on their own and totally independently. That is not what autonomous learning is about as it does take the whole teacher / counselor to assist. However, the students can do more than we and they think. This seminar will introduce the concept of autonomous learning with both the theoretical background and practical examples. It might be a useful approach for some of our students and some of the teachers too. We are planning a research that will unveil students attitudes towards language learning from the perspective of autonomy that will be discussed too.
