Description XVI. Brno geriatric day for geriatricians, internists, general practitioners and paramedical stuff with international participation will be held on 13th March 2013 in the cinema auditorium of the University Hospital Brno-Bohunice. This conference, as in previous years, has the postgraduate educational character. The invited speakers are leading experts not only from the Czech or Slovak Republic, but also from Italy, with their lectures touching the common themes of geriatric patients. The main topics of the scientific program are lectures dealing with specifics of cardiovascular diseases in old age; lectures dealing with the problems of diabetes, thyroid disorders and wound healing in terms of both the surgeon and geriatrician. Attention is also paid to geriatric frailty, advances in rheumatology and polyfarmacotherapy problem. The event contains 15 invited lectures by leading experts in their field. Congress lacks neither poster section, which presents the seven original works of young authors on the issue. The population of the Czech Republic ages rapidly. Meanwhile, with our 14.6% of senior citizens we blong to the relatively “younger” countries of the European Union. This situation will change very quickly over the coming few decades, and in 2060 there will be 33% of the Czech population aged 65 years and 14% (as at present is 3.4%) even above 80 years. The quantity of elderly ? 85 years will be nearly seven times larger (7.5% versus 1.2%'s current). In the light of this demographic projections it is necessary to percieve the optional and very plausible rise of disability, senile fragility and geriatric syndromes and to přepade the public professionals for this issue. This is the main goal of this event.
