Citation
Description The paper paper first focuses on Byron's description of the Orient in the Oriental cantos of Don Juan, but then it moves to the analysis of the later cantos set in England. It is argued that Byron uses the stereotypical views of the East in order to criticize the West. In Don Juan, the other appears much like the self, particularly with the aid of comic reflexivity. For Byron, albeit in a comic mode, Orient and Occident are one.
