Description The history of 20th century music is replete with examples of obsessions by the future at the expense of the present. As if the future lent its legitimacy to the presence of musical thinking. Those days are thankfully gone. Italian Futurists, Arnold Schoenberg, John Cage and others have become historical showpieces of future forecasts of music and today more than ever remind us that the only givenness in music is her past. This may or may not become a source of making a present, while the future is only a projection of our wishes and desires.
