Description | The goal of this paper is to present the results of research dealing with role of ethnicity in two de-segregated classrooms attended by majority as well as Roma pupils. The ethnographical research focused on everyday contexts, situations and utterances when ethnicity was made significant. Ethnicity was conceptualized as relational, negotiated and emerging category which intersects with other social identities (gender, age). The main focus was on the role of ethnicity during interaction rituals, symbolically intense events which are part of class breaks as well interactional order of the classes. The author analyses position of Roma pupils in the classrooms where their imagined differences are othered but can also serve to self-assertion in peer culture. |
