Description Myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of the cardiac muscle most frequently caused by viral etiology with possible contribution of immune and autoimmune mechanisms. Myocarditis is considered to be the most common cause of dilated cardiomyopathy. Typical manifestation is heart failure, arrhythmias or chest pain. The most important non-invasive diagnostic method is magnetic resonance imaging; however the golden standard of diagnosis is an invasive method - endomyocardial biopsy. In a significant number of cases with impaired left ventricular systolic function recovery occurs spontaneously, and therefore it is appropriate to postpone any key therapeutic decisions by about 3-6 months after diagnosis.
